According to a 2019 Supreme Court decision, bike modifications are acceptable and legal as long as they do not change or alter the vehicle’s specifications. The Supreme Court authorizes the RTO to issue clearance for modest colour and engine alterations.
What Kinds of Motorcycle Modifications Are Legal in India?
Obtaining clearance for colour changes is required. The RTO can grant you permission to change the colour of your bike or car.
Minor alterations or modifications such as engine belly, tail tidy, decals, visors, winglets, and so on are permitted. Because such changes do not necessarily modify the specifications, they are acceptable.
If your vehicle’s engine is no longer working properly, you can replace it with a new engine. To replace the engine, you must get a No Objection Certificate from the RTO. Furthermore, after changing the engine, you must submit for re-registration. According to the guidelines, both old and new engines must use the same variant.
Tire modifications of the tires are permitted. But only if you fit your bike with tires that match the top-spec variant. Tires that do not suit the model pose a safety concern and are unlawful.
